The Past

Stephen 'Spling' Aspeling has been a film fanatic since he first watched the psychedelic Elephant Dance from Dumbo in the early '80s, and a movie reviewer since March 2007. His passion for art, cinema and language led him to complete a B.A. in Film, Media & Visual Studies.

A B.Tech degree and several years of copywriting experience later... his DVD collection easily clears 900 original titles (and counting...) and Spling realises that while movies are art, they are essentially entertainment.

The Present

His balanced perspective means that his taste in film caters for art house and commercial movies. Each movie is reviewed on its own merits, both in terms of entertainment and artistic appreciation.

Spling launched Spling Movies CC, which facilitates this movie review website, MOVIESMS, an SMS movie review service in South Africa, is a member of FCASA, the "movie guru" at DVBee and currently writes commercial movie reviews for  2OceansVibe (SA's #1 Blog), art house film reviews for CapeTownCreatives (a new artistic initiative) and articles for ZAGlamour (a bimonthly men's digizine).

The Future

Spling wants to change the world of movie reviews by making movie reviews more accessible to you. With Spling you're getting the perspective of a movie goer with a movie reviewer's frame of reference.

Spling believes that movie reviews should be more accessible in terms of consumption and retrieval, which has prompted such innovations as MovieSMS and spling.mobi.
