Blockbusters

What You Want to See.

The Low Down: Blockbusters Entertainment is a franchise run business, founded by the original Steers Group and has been in operation since 1991.The home entertainment video rental chain has outlets located throughout South Africa in all nine provinces and has become recognised as one of the major players in the rental industry, thriving on new release rentals.

Pros: Blockbusters Entertainment are a traditional commercial video chain with a focus on new release DVD rentals with category title rental deals. New releases are set at R21 per rental with Midweek Madness at R30 for 2 new releases. Their range of category title incentives includes: Xtra Value, where customers can rent a new release and get a category title free from Tuesday-Thursday and early returns are rewarded with a category title at half-price.

Blockbusters attends to the needs of Joe Average with an extensive range of new release titles and a large archive of category titles. Their membership options are reasonable with contracts starting from 8 DVDs for R130 and ranging to 38 DVDs for R480. Blockbusters often have product-related promotions and the stores are conveniently located near fast food franchises, parkades and shopping centres.

Cons: Blockbusters is a commercial video store chain and as such the staff turnover is quite high with video store assistants treating their roles as jobs. Don't expect to find a wealth of knowledge behind the counter. Treat Blockbusters as the fast food option: reasonable prices, conveniently located and standardised service. Since Blockbusters Entertainment is a franchise, this feedback will vary from store-to-store dependent on location and customer base etc.
