New cinema releases this week... Salt, Dorian Gray, Hopeville, Vampires Suck and Life, Above All.

Salt Movie PosterSALT (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Phillip Noyce
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor
Genre: Action, Mystery, Thriller
Age Restriction: 16V

Evelyn Salt is a Russian spy and defector set on the loose in the United States and wanted by government officials. Salt's short, sharp bursts of action, story and genre will remind you of the Bourne series, but Jolie's slight frame and the movie's ridiculous plot make this a popcorn affair. It's not her best work as the Tomb Raider star fills the boots of what probably should have been a Milla Jovovich movie, but its quick-paced action and rousing soundtrack make it entertaining enough to stand alongside films like: Murder at 1600, Naked Weapon 2 and Die Another Day. Full Review...

Dorian Gray Movie PosterDORIAN GRAY (2009)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Oliver Parker
Starring: Ben Barnes, Colin Firth, Rachel Hurd Wood
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Thriller
Age Restriction: 16SNVD

Dorian Gray is an Oscar Wilde adaptation about an seemingly immortal man whose portrait reflects his real age as he runs his body down through hedonistic sex and drug binges. This is a Gothic style fantasy thriller and period piece with solid production values and a decent ensemble. However, the return on the style and thrills is diminished due to a blank lead performance from Ben Barnes. (AR)

LIFE, ABOVE ALL (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Oliver Schmitz
Starring: Khomotso Manyaka, Harriet Lenabe
Genre: Drama
Age Restriction: 13

Life, Above All is based on the international award-winning novel 'Chanda's Secrets' by Allan Stratton and has been lovingly adapted to film by Oliver Schmitz (Mapantsula, Hijack Stories). The film stars Khomotso Manyaka as Chanda, a 12-year-old girl with a bright future, as she bears the emotional turmoil of the death of her baby sister, her mother's turn in health and her stepfather's alcoholism in a community of rumours. It's a coming-of-age drama and tearjerker, which reflects modern South Africa through the touching relationship between mother and daughter. (AR)

HOPEVILLE (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: John Trengrove
Starring: Themba Ndaba, Jonathan Pienaar, Desmond Dube, Junior Singo
Genre: Drama
Age Restriction: 10M

Hopeville is based on the TV series, which ran on SABC 2 last year and screened at several festivals. This redemptive and uplifting South African story follows an alcoholic father, who relocates to the small town of Hopeville, where he plans to restore a local swimming pool for his son to train in. The film is a condensed version of the television series with a focus on moral regeneration, also directed by John Trengrove. Most of the original star-studded South African cast return to resume their roles. (AR)

VAMPIRES SUCK (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Jason Friedberg, Aaron Seltzer
Starring: Jenn Proske, Diedrich Bader, Matt Lanter
Genre: Comedy, Spoof
Age Restriction: 13LV

Just as Meet the Spartans emerged after the 300 phenomenon, so Vampires Suck comes to life. The film-makers that brought us Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie and who amazingly hold writing credits for Scary Movie have done it again. Capitalizing on current trends and providing half-baked spoofs of whatever it is they're riding on is their specialty. Vampires Suck is for people that love/hate the Twilight series and if you only manage a chuckle or two over 82 minutes, consider it a job well done. While it marks an improvement over their previous stinker, Disaster Movie... they say you can only go up from rock bottom. (AR)

The Men Who Stare at Goats and The Last Song!

The Men Who Stare At Goats Movie PosterTHE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS (2009)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Grant Heslov
Starring: Ewan McGregor, George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey
Genre: Comedy, War
Age Restriction: 16L

The Men Who Stare At Goats is quite simply bizarre. Fronted by several leading Hollywood A-list stars and Academy Award contenders, this strange tale seeks to complement its even stranger title with a behind-the-scenes commentary on war. The off-the-wall comedy and first-rate cast help secure your attention as secret laboratories and conspiracy theories run amok, but this war comedy is definitely not for everyone. Wacky dialogue and committed performances may work for Monty Python, but this is in another league of silliness.

The Last Song Movie PosterTHE LAST SONG (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Julie Ann Robinson
Starring: Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear, Kelly Preston
Genre: Drama, Romance
Age Restriction: PG13

The Last Song is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, making it comparable with The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, Dear John and A Walk to Remember. However, try as it may... it doesn't measure up to its peers. Miley Cyrus may take the brunt of the blame, delivering a forgettable performance as Ronnie Miller, a young rebellious teen who spends a Summer with a father she's grown to hate. She's still fresh when it comes to feature film, despite a considerable amount of TV acting. The story is typical Sparks and you can't help but wonder how someone like Amanda Bynes would've handled the role. Apart from a miscast lead, the film suffers from the trappings of melodrama and becomes somewhat cheesy and predictable at times.

Now Showing This Week (27/08/10)

New cinema releases this week... Avatar [3D], Agora, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Chloe, The Bad Lieutenant and Just Wright.

Avatar Movie PosterAVATAR: SPECIAL EDITION (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: James Cameron
Starring: Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Age Restriction: 13MLV

Avatar became the quintessential blockbuster epic last year when it crushed attendance records and championed 3D cinema. Now it's back on the big screen for all of those who didn't manage to see it the first time, or for the fans to get another fix in 3D. The catch, it's got 8 minutes of never-before-seen footage to tantalize and draw you back into the world of Pandora. Full Review...

Agora Movie PosterAGORA (2009)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Alejandro Amenabar
Starring: Rachel Weisz, Rupert Evans, Oscar Isaac
Genre: Adventure, Drama, History, Romance
Age Restriction: 13VP

If you like HBO's Rome television series, then the lavish Roman history drama epic, Agora, will be just up your street. Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) stars in this lavish historical drama and delivers a superb performance as the famous atheist, Hypatia of Alexandria. The script lacks focus as morality, religion and politics take centre stage and there are moments where you feel like you should be taking notes, but well worth your time.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice Movie PosterTHE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Jon Turteltaub
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
Age Restriction: 10V

Jon Turteltaub and Nicolas Cage collaborated on National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets, two action-packed, quick-paced action-adventures. They do it again, except this time in New York City within the realm of fantasy as Balthazar, an immortal sorcerer fulfills an ancient prophecy by seconding an apprentice and battling his evil nemesis in a bid to save New York City and the world. Fun, entertaining and loaded with comic relief, awkward romance and great action set pieces - a popcorn blockbuster! Full Review...

CHLOE (2009)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Atom Egoyan
Starring: Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Julianna Moore
Genre: Drama, Thriller
Age Restriction: 16LNS

Chloe is an erotic thriller with a difference. Atom Egoyan's love triangle thriller is pensive, mysterious and full of tension. Solid performances from the ensemble keep this film on tenterhooks and as with Egoyan's other films, Chloe is thought-provoking. However, the film would've needed a few more thrills and some more heat to make Chloe stand-out as a true classic within the genre.

Just Wright Movie PosterJUST WRIGHT (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Sanaa Hamri
Starring: Queen Laitfah, Common, Paula Patton
Genre: Drama, Comedy, Romance, Sports
Age Restriction: PG

Queen Latifah hasn't been more natural in her latest film, Just Wright. She stars as a physical therapist, who falls for a recuperating basketball star (Common) in her care, but her best friend (Patton) has other ideas. This light "romcom" sports drama is formulaic and cliched at times, but has enough of a new spin and enough charismatic performances to hold your attention.

The Bad Lieutenant Movie PosterTHE BAD LIEUTENANT (2009)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Werner Herzog
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer
Genre: Drama, Crime
Age Restriction: 16 DLSV

This Werner Herzog crime drama is loosely based on The Bad Lieutenant (1992) with Harvey Keitel and has been made to look like it was made by Uwe Boll in the '80s. It's essentially a send up of the crime genre, but other than Nic Cage's over-the-top performance... there's very little to laugh at. In fact, if it weren't for the actor-director synergy between Cage and Herzog, the film would fall apart. Unfortunately, this doesn't make up for cliched bad cop scenes and Cage's hedonistic, hunchback tour of New Orleans. The Beastie Boys could have made a better cop drama and there's no clear motivation as to why you should carry on watching. Loads of cult appeal, but not for everyone. Full Review...

New DVD rental releases at DVBee this week:

Kick-Ass and Extraordinary Measures!

Kick-Ass Movie PosterKICK-ASS (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: Matthew Vaughan
Starring: Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong
Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller
Age Restriction: 16LVD

Plain, simple and cheesy, Kick-Ass kicks ass. It's an instant comic book cult hit anda special blend of Watchmen, The Professional, Superbad and Spider-Man. Our primary hero (Johnson) and title character, Dave Lizewski is a Peter Parker knock-off in serious need of anger management. He forms part of the unnoticed high school geek elite, an indistinct, acne-riddled kid... that's until he becomes Kick-Ass - part-time vigilante and defender of the weaker. A stylish and ultra-violent movie about real-life superheroes. Full Review...

Extraordinary Measures Movie PosterEXTRAORDINARY MEASURES (2010)
Watch Movie Trailer
Director: John G. Avildsen
Starring: Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser, Keri Russell
Genre: Drama
Age Restriction: PG

Extraordinary Measures is a tearjerker. The film creates awareness of Pompe's Disease, a rare genetic disorder that children are born with, which causes death before the age of 10. It's watchable primarily for its co-leads in Ford and Fraser, whose charismatic performances clear the way through all the melodrama. The film is competent, yet bears the emotional baggage that any story about battling corporates and fighting for a child's welfare carries. It's a little too predictable and weepy for some, but if you're up for a good cry... this TV style drama will do.
