Predators Movie Review: It's Got Nothing on Predator

Predators Movie Poster

Predators is a sequel to Predator and Predator 2. Since it's no longer cool to add a number to denote how many times a blockbuster has been exploited, unless you're going straight to video or you're a superhero... it gets the imaginative reworking, Predators. Now it's been a good 23 years since Arnie busted a Predator's chops in the original and in that time we've also seen a spin-off, AVP: Alien vs. Predator with its own sequel. Predator has become a Hollywood icon thanks to the late special effects and monster magnet, Stan Winston, who was nominated for an Oscar for this "pretty" beast.

The 1987 actioner with Schwarzenegger taking charge as Dutch was the equivalent of pitting Rambo vs. Alien for its time, a classic that has stood the test of time *clink, clink*. John McTiernan was at the top of his game, following this little jungle gem up with the best action movie of all-time, you may have heard of it... Die Hard (1988) and then tipping his hat again with another Scottish bloke at the second peak of his career with The Hunt for Red October (1990). Predator was the film that put Carl Weathers on the map and launched a tough guy film career for Bill Duke, creating a symbolic Vietnam triumph in an era in which Hollywood and America was preoccupied with NAM: Platoon (1986), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) to name a few...continued.

New Rental Releases This Week (02/07/10)

New DVD rental releases at DVBee this week:

Nanny McPhee & The Big Bang, 9, The Tournament and The Bounty Hunter!

Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang Movie PosterNANNY MCPHEE AND THE BIG BANG (2010)
Director: Susanna White
Starring: Emma Thompson, Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal
Genre: Comedy, Family, Fantasy
Age Restriction: PG

Emma Thompson's lovable Nanny McPhee character returns for yet another fun-filled adventure in this polished sequel. This family movie may be a little corny and over-the-top for some, but features a first-rate cast and makes an overall improvement on the first Nanny McPhee with another superb performance from Thompson.

9 (2009)
Director: Shane Acker
Starring: Christopher Plummer, Crispin Glover, John C. Reilly
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Age Restriction: 10V

This unconventional animated feature carries a thought-provoking message much like The Matrix and Final Fantasy. The animation is beautiful, crisp and poetic as several hand-stitched dolls representing the various facets of their maker try to make sense of their post-apocalyptic future. The aesthetics and voice cast are the main reason to see 9 as the story is a little stunted and uninviting.

The Tournament Movie PosterTHE TOURNAMENT (2009)
Director: Scott Mann
Starring: Ving Rhames, Kelly Hu, Liam Cunningham
Genre: Action, Thriller
Age Restriction: 16VLNB

This B-movie quality actioner has an ultimate survivor plot as an assassin's tournament gets underway. Naturally, it's all about action - sporting some intensive fight choreography and wild gun play. There aren't any big name stars in this ensemble, but brutal, violent action and gore supersedes the need for any real acting. The Tournament needed some decent comedy and a couple of cheesy one-liners to offset all the violence, which unfortunately is not on offer.

Bounty Hunter Movie PosterTHE BOUNTY HUNTER (2010)
Director: Andy Tennant
Starring: Gerard Butler, Jennifer Aniston
Genre: Action, Comedy, Crime, Romance
Age Restriction: 10L

If you enjoyed films like Fool's Gold, The Killers and Knight and Day, there's a good chance you'll enjoy The Bounty Hunter. Backed by two likable stars, this light action comedy about an ex-wife on the run from her bounty hunter husband has the right ingredients for some light '80s format entertainment. Unfortunately, its flat script, scatterbrain direction, skittish plot and lack-lustre co-lead chemistry make it fall short of expectations - resulting in an innocuous, silly and stale date movie. Full Review...

Inception/Toy Story 3 Mash-Up Trailer

Two of this season's biggest blockbusters, Inception and Toy Story 3, are a lot more similar than you think! This brilliant mash-up of Pixar's third Toy Story installment and Christopher Nolan's groundbreaking dream saga is almost a perfect fit thanks to some clever editing. Watch the visuals from the Toy Story 3 movie with the Inception trailer's soundtrack.

Leonardo DiCaprio was the lead and big name star carrying Inception, while some argue that Michael Keaton's take on Ken doll was the scene stealer in Toy Story 3. Watch as Ken conspires inception in the daycare centre as Barbie and Huggy bear look on. Original Inception Trailer | Original Toy Story 3 Trailer

WARNING: This mash-up trailer makes lovable characters like Buzz and Woody look like supporting acts.

Broken Embraces Movie Review: Spectrum of Love

Broken Embraces Movie Poster

Penelope Cruz starred in Pedro Almodovar's Volver and the two have collaborated once again in Broken Embraces, a drama about infidelity and redemption. This Spanish film is told from the perspective of Harry Caine, a blind writer, who is forced to deal with past pains 14 years earlier when he was directing what was to be his last film.

Broken Embraces is a character-driven drama starring Lluís Homar,Blanco PortillaJosé Luis Gómez, Rubén Ochandiano and Penélope Cruz. The film's narrative progression is a little confusing at first, but all the pieces eventually come together as each character's motivations are explored and alliances are made. Lluís Homar plays Harry, a blind writer formerly known as Mateo, a promising film director years earlier. Lena, his lead actress and muse played by Penélope Cruz, is his desire and the two enter into a torrid love affair behind the back of Lena's "partner", Ernesto (Gómez). Ernesto watches the two from a roving peephole intently as his son relays behind-the-scenes footage as part of his documentary.

Broken Embraces has a similar story to Fellini's 8 1/2 with a focus on a director, a film and a muse. Which is quite interesting because Penélope Cruz recently starred...continued.

Inception Movie Review: Dark, Clinical and Majestic

Inception Movie Poster

When Christopher Nolan releases a movie the world stops and takes notice... The director started making films when he was just seven-years-old and 33 years down the line he's still doing what he loves with only several feature length films to date. A short filmography by Hollywood standards, but when you consider Stanley Kubrick only made 16 films in 5 decades it puts Nolan's career in perspective. Just like Kubrick, Nolan's films carry some serious weight, in substance and in return. Unlike Kubrick, Nolan's films have managed to bridge the great divide... conjoining the big budget allure of a traditional blockbuster with the finesse of an art house production.

With such titles as Insomnia, Memento, The Prestige, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and now Inception under his belt it seems as though he can't go wrong with his dark surge of films that just seem to get better-and-better. Nolan's been attached to the new dawn of Batman in a scourge of films that literally tear previous efforts apart with a realistic depiction of superheroes. The comic book heroes of the '50s have gravitated from tongue-in-cheek fantasy to epic crime sagas in the hands of Nolan. His dark, titanic and revolutionary films have raised the bar when it comes to film-making in the genres of crime and fantasy.

Inception is Nolan's first wholly original film since Following with a script that took 8 years to complete. The story follows Dom Cobb (DiCaprio), who...continued.
