"The Mall Sucks." - Kalahari.net's Dark Side

Kalahari.net have thrown down the gauntlet with their latest dark comedy print ad campaign urging you to shop online so that your don't endanger your health. Ironically, their latest print media campaign is the sort of viral medium, mall fashion outlet YDE have made famous over the years with soft shock tactics presented in an unreal fashion. In this picture, a blonde woman slips on a wet floor and hits the ground head first... just one of several images, including a toilet seat, a bauble head trauma and someone getting stuck in a roundabout door.

The Mall Sucks - Kalahari.net

The campaign will obviously cut close to the bone for some people and especially shopping malls, which will also be competing for traffic in the post World Cup sales slump. Killing yourself at the mall brings to mind that story of the kid who jumped off a ledge to commit suicide in front of his girlfriend at Cavendish Square in Cape Town a year or so ago. Come to think of it, that flooring looks kind of familiar? If they were looking for a reaction... they've got one, so save a life and avoid your mall by shopping online with Kalahari.net. It won't kill you.

Themba Movie Review: A Boy Called Hope

Themba: A Boy Called Hope is an inspirational coming-of-age drama about a young South African boy's escape from poverty and the pursuit of a dream. The film couldn't have come at a better time, releasing in the aftermath of the hugely successful 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. However, this isn't any ordinary South African film and if you're expecting Hollywood formula in this sports drama, you'll be disappointed. While football forms the backdrop to this emotional journey, it's simply a theme and a driving force for our title character. There are soccer matches, but Themba: A Boy Called Hope is more about the triumph of the human spirit against social, economic and familial adversity.

The film is a German/South African co-production based on Lutz van Dijk's novel Crossing the Line and directed by Stefanie Sycholt (Malunde). The production values are much higher than most locally-produced films and the rich, powerful and uplifting storytelling overcomes insignificant flaws. The writing is homegrown and one can sense an inherent cultural understanding from the film-makers.

The cast is primarily made up of local talent with several debuts, including German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, local soccer legend Doc Khumalo as himself with a well-cast cameo from Rapulana Seiphemo as Themba's estranged father, Vuyo. African pop singer, Simphiwe Dana delivers an outstanding debut performance as Themba's mother, Mandisa...continued.

Now Showing This Week (06/08/10)

New cinema releases this week... Mao's Last Dancer, Grown Ups, Predators and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.

Mao's Last Dancer Movie PosterMAO'S LAST DANCER (2009)
Director: Bruce Beresford
Starring: Bruce Greenwood, Joan Chen, Chi Cao
Genre: Drama
Age Restriction: 10M

Mao's Last Dancer is an epic, competent and uplifting biopic based on Li Cunxin's triumph of the human spirit heroics. Flawed, but grounded by its absorbing story and told with great passion and reverence. A grand and emotional journey for those that enjoyed Billy Elliot.

Predators Movie PosterPREDATORS (2010)
Director: Nimrod Antal
Starring: Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Age Restriction: 16LV

Predators is an unnecessary sequel hatched by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Nimrod Antal. The franchise has become too entrenched in pop culture to resonate in this Ten Little Indians meets Lost take on Predator. Predators lacks the original's novelty, mystery and fear factor, despite a promising setup and a first-rate cast. You'll get more out of watching Schwarzenegger take on a Predator as Dutch in the original again. Full Review...

Grown Ups Movie PosterGROWN UPS (2010)
Director: Dennis Dugan
Starring: Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Chris Rock
Genre: Comedy
Age Restriction: 10M

Grown Ups is based on the adult reunion of a childhood friend basketball team, in actual fact Adam Sandler's comedy gang. Summer camp pranks and immature family comedy bubble over as the troupe get to grips and make light of their lot in life. Light, happy-go-lucky dumb fun with one or two typical Sandler jokes thrown in for good measure.

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore Movie PosterCATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE (2010)
Director: Brad Peyton
Starring: Better Midler, Sean Hayes, James Marsden, Nick Nolte
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Age Restriction: PG

If you can count your age on your fingers and find goofy talking pets with celebrity voices funny then you've got a match made in heaven. If not, you'd be more entertained watching your own pet coughing up a hairball on YouTube. There's no substitute for unimaginative, poor writing - not even Bette Midler.

Predators Movie Review: It's Got Nothing on Predator

Predators Movie Poster

Predators is a sequel to Predator and Predator 2. Since it's no longer cool to add a number to denote how many times a blockbuster has been exploited, unless you're going straight to video or you're a superhero... it gets the imaginative reworking, Predators. Now it's been a good 23 years since Arnie busted a Predator's chops in the original and in that time we've also seen a spin-off, AVP: Alien vs. Predator with its own sequel. Predator has become a Hollywood icon thanks to the late special effects and monster magnet, Stan Winston, who was nominated for an Oscar for this "pretty" beast.

The 1987 actioner with Schwarzenegger taking charge as Dutch was the equivalent of pitting Rambo vs. Alien for its time, a classic that has stood the test of time *clink, clink*. John McTiernan was at the top of his game, following this little jungle gem up with the best action movie of all-time, you may have heard of it... Die Hard (1988) and then tipping his hat again with another Scottish bloke at the second peak of his career with The Hunt for Red October (1990). Predator was the film that put Carl Weathers on the map and launched a tough guy film career for Bill Duke, creating a symbolic Vietnam triumph in an era in which Hollywood and America was preoccupied with NAM: Platoon (1986), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) to name a few...continued.
